Oh hai!

I would have been here much earlier except that while I was watching Johnny SLAY ALL THE THINGS during Super Bowl weekend, his alter ego Loki apparently crept into Jotunheim Chicago and dumped a truly astonishing 22 inches of snow. Which then drifted to create a 4-foot-high wall of snow between me and my garage, which I waded through anyway in fierce determination to get to my car only to discover another snow wall between the garage door and the alley that abruptly shattered the light and heartwarming fantasy of actually driving somewhere to get stuff that I had been entertaining in my head. So instead we decided we’d try walking somewhere, but then discovered we could hardly push the front door open at all, and even when we finally did manage to create a sliver of space to squeeze through, we couldn’t find the front porch steps leading down into the yard anyway. Because SNOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

We considered sledding down the steps, but the sled’s in the garage.

So we sort of just fell down the steps through the snow and arrived in a heap at the front gate, which also required a Herculean effort to push open, and then we finally made it to what used to be a sidewalk but is now sort of a whimsical, avant-garde snow sculpture that snakes all through the neighborhood, created by a zillion people all falling in the snow trying to get to the bus and/or a local store—which we did accomplish, miraculously and with an undertone of quiet desperation because there was zero Coke Zero left in this house—and a thousand hours of shoveling later, we also have a path to the garage and the still-useless car, because even if we tried to shovel out a path for the car into the alley, the alley hasn’t been plowed anyway and also: THERE IS NOWHERE TO PUT THE SHOVELED SNOW. Except for the alley.

Also it snowed again yesterday while we were shoveling.

Also it’s snowing right now.

So, having finished battling the elements for the moment and entombed as I am until perhaps May, I can at last turn my thoughts wistfully to Phoenix, where there was no snow at all but a whole lot of sparkle over the weekend thanks to one Johnny G. Weir and his glitterrific take on the Super Bowl.

Our recap starts with the Johnny media whirlwind. Here are all his various Super Bowl segments leading up to the big game:

Friday.
The weekend media blitz begins with Access Hollywood Live!

Then on to The Soup!
Video (Johnny-only segments) link.

Saturday.
Cris Collinsworth’s Super Bowl Special.
Johnny & Tara’s segment had previously been released
on Friday by NBC, but was definitely worth
watching again. And again.

And Super Bowl Zone. At last, the promised footage
of Johnny & Tara in Rawhide Western Town!
Video link.

And then it was Sunday.

Our first glimpse of his look came from his Instagram:

Via Johnny: “Look of the Day:
Hat and Blacks @kerinrosegold @amorireyewear,
Pads @marlongobel, Turtle @andrelanderosmichel,
Tights @Rufskin, Sneaks @giuseppezanottiworld.
Styled with @whathewears”

Soon after, he and Tara made their first appearance on the pregame broadcast and were screencapped by NBC:

And as social media exploded, major media rushed to report. Here are just a few of my fav articles (more coverage on Johnny’s website):

Washington Post: Johnny Weir Wears Spectacular Football Fascinator to Super Bowl Pregame Show With Tara Lipinski
When you’ve got a lengthy pregame show to fill, you need all the help you can get and NBC chose very, very wisely with two of its commentators.

Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski may know more about fashion and skating than football, but, really, who cares when Johnny shows up in a purple sequined fascinator shaped like a football.

USA Today/For The Win: Johnny Weir’s Super Bowl Outfit Is Beyond Amazing

Business Insider: Johnny Weir’s Super Bowl Outfit Is Incredible

Zap2It: Johnny Weir’s Spectacular Super Bowl XLIX Outfit Comes With a Football Fascinator

Huffington Post: Johnny Weir’s Outfit Already Won The Super Bowl
These days, there are few better reasons to tune in to a major event (like the Olympics or the Oscars, for example) than to catch a glimpse of Johnny Weir in one of his many colorful outfits. During Sunday’s Super Bowl pregame show, the figure-skater-turned-commentator did not disappoint.

After the first articles hit, the brilliant creator of his hat stepped in to clarify exactly what he was wearing on his head: an actual football.

Via Kerin: “How do you Super Bowl? A close up of
our #amorirprojects by @kerinrosegold for Johnny Weir
(@johnnygweir) - a REAL football hand strassed
with @official_Swarovski crystals!”

And the designer behind the vest showed us the back view:

Via @marlongobel: “So I guess our crystal Armor
on @johnnygweir won #sb49 and #broketheinternet!
Congrats @whathewears!”

Within minutes, and throughout the day, Johnny was a trending topic on Twitter in:

... Boston ...

... Seattle ...

... and across the entire US.

And yes, of course the haters freaked. A LOT.

But they were overwhelmingly drowned out by a Twitter tsunami of delighted viewers who loved him. A small sample from among thousands of tweets:

Actress Melissa Joan Hart is a fan!

From YouTube star Jenna Mourey/Marbles
to her 3.69 million followers.
(Yes, “fleek” is a good thing.)

Johnny’s stylist, Ryan Davis, made a statement in gif form.

He actually had not nearly enough screen time within the endless six-hour block of pregame. Here’s one of his segments. More pregame vids coming!

wife of New England Patriot Michael Hoomanawanui.

UPDATE!!
Full video of all Johnny’s pregame segments!
Video link.

(Yes, he was on camera less than 10 minutes in six hours.
That’s what all the homophobes’ fuss was about. So ridiculous.
But also so wonderful to see all the tremendously positive
reaction drowning out the ignorance.)

And finally: Kathy Griffin, who tweeted her support
for Johnny on Sunday, also covered his outfit
 on Fashion Police Monday night.

And one more, from Johnny:
“Via @nfl! Loving the Super Bowl experience.
@taralipinski @taraandjohnny”

Oh BTW: Super Bowl XLIX pulled in HUGE ratings
to become not just the most watched Super Bowl ever, but

And also: from Bob Raissman, sports writer for the NY Daily News:

Let me say this: The NBC suit who decided to bring
figure skating stars Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski on to
the Supe pregame show should be given a promotion and a raise.
They not only added a touch of class to the proceedings,
featuring the usual assortment of football Gasbags,
but were clearly an inspiration.

Bonus Fun:
Johnny on Japanese TV!

Also during Super Bowl weekend, Japan’s TBS aired this piece filmed for “Taiiku-Kai-TV” while Johnny was in Japan for Medal Winners Open in January. In the episode, Johnny is reunited with Japanese skater Miyu, for whom he designed the beautiful costume she wears in the skating pics below.

Please, please watch every bit of this video if you haven’t already (or even if you have!). This is one of the most wonderful Johnny things I have ever seen. Even though I understand only about three words of Japanese, it doesn’t matter. He’s smiling almost nonstop through this whole video, and often laughing helplessly. And my wish was granted: we get to see Johnny skating in Hello Kitty leggings with a Hello Kitty barrette in his hair. It is just the best.
