So Johnny and the Sundance/EPIX team behind his new documentary, To Russia With Love, were out in force at the Uprising of Love benefit concert last night, at which the film received a great deal of attention.

According to today’s report in Variety, “Throughout the night, screens showed clips of ‘To Russia with Love,’ the documentary about queer Olympians in Sochi that will air Oct. 29 on EPIX.”

Three clips have been released publicly by EPIX to Vimeo. And they are powerful.

The 90-minute film tells several sides of the global equality story, with an emphasis on the crisis facing LGBT people in Russia as well as an exploration of the view of LGBT athletes within the context of the Sochi Olympics. The new clips focus on the astonishingly brave yet searingly fragile Vladislav Slavskiy, a 17-year-old gay man from Sochi who also was in attendance at Uprising of Love. He appeared on the red carpet with Johnny, and had a moment on stage as well, according to Variety:

At the end of the night [Vlad] emerged to thank the audience for its support, and remind everyone there’s still more work to be done. It earned him a standing ovation.

I think you’ll see why.

And I hope that this documentary exceeds all goals for viewership, because these heartbreaking stories must be told.

And these brave voices must be heard.

This is the clip in which Johnny appears.

In introducing this clip at Uprising of Love, Greg Louganis noted that Johnny loves Russia and her culture, and “has since childhood. Taking a stand against Russia’s leadership was a task he was reluctant to take up. But with the Games winding down and his duties done, Johnny agreed to meet with Vlad, one of Sochi’s most vulnerable young activists, and an amazing young man.”

At the end, in the non-subtitled portion, Johnny says, with characteristically brutal self-awareness:

Vlad was the surprise for me in Sochi. I think about him often, just because he gave me the insight—that I wasn’t necessarily interested in seeing—into the way people from my own community are treated in a country that I love so much.

Great articles and pictures! Already looking for a way to watch "To Russia with Love", since we don't have EPIX...but I will NOT miss it! Maybe viewer parties....On a lighter subject, LOVE that Johnny ROCKED that ponytail! <3

We don't receive Epix, so I hope I can buy a download of "To Russia with Love" via iTunes.

Thank goodness Vlad is out of Russia. He should not suffer as he does. LGBT have been scapegoats for centuries, and this is so wrong.
