From Skorts to Soviet Uniforms, "He Is an Awesome Man"

Johnny at the alice + olivia presentation
during NYFW last night. He tweeted that he’d be wearing
a “skort”; the Fug Girls briefly described his shorts-in-front-
pleated-skirt-in-back look as “a bum cape,”
but promise a more lengthy discussion to come.
Of course the real story was his spectacularly gigantic
arm cuff.... (see below). Photo via Getty.

Also below: His outstanding interview
with Keith Olbermann re: the Sochi Olympics.

NYFW UPDATE!!
Johnny will be attending The Blonds NYFW
presentation on Wednesday, September 11,
at 9 pm EDT (livestream here).
And he’ll be walking in Tumbler and Tipsy
by Michael Kuluva, presented by AIDS Healthcare Foundation
on Thursday, September 12, at 2 pm
(BTW here’s Johnny walking for Tumbler and Tipsy
earlier this year).
Can’t wait!

So Monday was a day full of Johnnyness, which is exactly how I like my Mondays or any day ending in the word “day,” which brings us to today, which is now full of yesterday’s Johnnydayness. I am in favor of this as a continuing trend.

While there’s no coverage of the dinner at Serafina Group that Johnny mentioned as one of three outings yesterday (let’s hope he just had a quiet meal amidst the normal crazed pace of NYFW), we do have fabulous picspam from his appearance at alice + olivia, which was followed by his equally fabulously articulate (as always) interview with Keith Olbermann. Between NYFW and Olbermann, he changed his look from the above pic to a different shirt, and donned his Soviet military uniform jacket previously seen here when he posed with “Laika, the first dog in space.”

Resplendent in said uniform with bonus brooch-like necklace retained from his NYFW appearance and wedding ring prominently displayed, he is the very picture of gay propaganda for Russia’s viewing pleasure as he chats with Keith about that exact topic.

Here’s the interview in its entirety. Every single minute is worth watching:

Best moment: At the very end of the piece, after he has elegantly made his case as to why he is adamantly against boycotting the Sochi Games, Johnny sums up in an exchange that leaves the notoriously loquacious Keith admittedly speechless:

Johnny: This is the Olympics. And while many people can sit at home on their couch and say, “Oh, we shouldn’t go to Russia because it’s bad,” just a few months ago—I live in NJ, so I’m not even still considered an equal human—I wasn’t considered an equal in this country. So why should I stay away from another country that doesn’t consider me equal? And why should I NOT show the world what I’ve worked hard for—and many people like me?

Keith: There’s not much of an answer to that other than your perspective on it—

Johnny [anticipating rebuttal—given Keith’s reputation—with wide but respectful grin]: Bring it, sir!

Keith: No, no, I’m saying, there’s not much of an answer to that. You’re absolutely right.

Once again: Your move, Russia.

UPDATE: So apparently Towle Road watched/listened to this interview with their own agenda firmly in place and came up with a post titled, “Keith Olbermann Exposes Johnny Weir’s Disappointing Position on Gays and the Sochi Games” (no link because I’m not about to send them any traffic), in which they deliberately left off Olbermann’s last line to support their skewed take. The only disappointing thing here? Just you, Towle Road. (And don’t even get me started on Instinct Magazine or AmericaBlog or any of the others. WTAF people. It’s really not that difficult to report accurately. Unless, of course, that’s not your goal in the first place.)

NYFW SS2014:
Johnny at alice + olivia

For those of us (yes, even those of us hopelessly fashion-challenged, who still grapple with the idea that FALL Fashion Week is all about SPRING, whilst clad in whatever we could find that wasn’t completely buried in the laundry pile but rather perched expectantly on top, anticipating our desperate need for almost-ready-to-wear, as we gamely play along every Fashion Week since because Johnny) who were breathlessly anticipating pics, it was something of a petulantly longish wait for a glimpse of the promised skort.

FINALLY we got some candid shots:

Photo tweeted by LeAura Luciano:
“#yes it’s @johnnygweir looking wonderful
in white headed to @alice_olivia
he graciously posed for a photo”

Photo tweeted by Sarah Hughes:
“@johnnygweir ‘s outfit!! #nyfw #fashion”

And then, at last, the red-carpet (or, in this case, blue-carpet) pics started rolling in... (some of which are quite pleasingly huge. Please click twice for full-size images.)

Close-up of his bag du jour,
a pic that is becoming a staple

THE ARM CUFF.

With alice + olivia’s Stacey Bendet.

My favorite pic of his chosen ensemble.
He personifies—as only he could—Stacey’s aesthetic/collection
 as described by PopSugar
“charm but not without whimsy.”

One more.
