"The Whole Magical Experience"

Johnny shopping at one of his fav stores
in Ketchum/Sun Valley, Idaho, on Saturday.
He performed Saturday night at Sun Valley on Ice
for quite a VIP crowd. Photo tweeted by Johnny:
“I love vintage shopping at Déjà Vu in Ketchum!
Chanel sailor pants? Bonjour! @ Déjà Vu.”
See more of Johnny at the Déjà Vu boutique
in previous years here.

So one of these years—possibly even this one—I am going to make the 3,462-mile round trip (this is not a made-up number) from Chicago to Sun Valley to see Johnny skate in this slice of Idaho paradise. Every fan I know who has done so has come away deliriously happy from the experience—the setting is gorgeous; the atmosphere casual, with multiple opportunities for autographs and pics; and the show itself is always beautifully done.

Alas, it was not yet my turn last weekend to experience this annual summer ritual, but fortunately for us, the lovely Anastasia Pryanikova was there, and has provided not only exclusive pics and vids today, but also her eyewitness account for the rest of us who spent the days in less dazzling pursuits (I’ve been following the news, much of it sad beyond words, whilst editing a book about childhood sexual abuse. You? Yeah. Sigh).

So if you’re as desperately in need of a tiny bit of sparkle as I am, here’s just the thing, with very special thanks to Ana.

Sun Valley:
Unforgettable

Part 1: Practice

Спасибо! @ Sun Valley Lodge”

The stars were shining brightly up above and on the ice in Sun Valley. Not many ice shows can boast a gorgeous setting of mountain silhouettes under the night skies.

But the whole magical experience of Sun Valley starts much earlier—during the practice. This is one of the reasons I love the venue so much. You can sit in the sun and watch the skaters’ practice.

Johnny arrived about half an hour before the pros’ practice time, strolling by the bleachers into the skating house to get ready while the previous session was ending and the Zamboni started resurfacing the ice....

Johnny was strong, beautiful, and extremely focused on the ice, in his black practice gear that shows off his muscular body so well. His jumps were powerful and gorgeous! And Sun Valley’s high altitude (nearly 6,000 feet above sea level) makes it all so much tougher—but you wouldn’t know it from watching him.

Part 2: Show Time!

While Ana was getting ready to enjoy
an evening of skating under the stars,
so was the show’s headliner.

The show started at dusk around 9:45 pm, and as soon as the doors opened at 8 pm, people began taking their seats and wrapping themselves in blankets. It is so easy to forget how temperatures drop in Sun Valley at nightfall.

This year, as we were entering the outdoor rink, we got a nice piece of memorabilia: limited edition cards with photos of Johnny.

Pic of the cards tweeted by Johnny:
“My first sunvalley trading card!”

Our side of the bleachers was pretty much packed. And the whole dining area in front of the rink, as well as a few extra rows of seats upfront, was reserved for the attendees of the Allen & Co. annual Sun Valley Conference that brings together major VIPs in business and politics, from Bill Gates to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, for a week of socializing and deal-making.

But Sun Valley on Ice was all about dazzling.

Johnny performed his Swan Prince program first. It was exquisite and flawless. He gracefully glided under the moon, and the music, lights, and the whole scenery around added their own magic.

In contrast to the subtle magnificence of Swan Lake, Born This Way took the audience on a fun, loud, and fiery ride. Can there be more sparkle?! I am so happy I finally got to see his costume extravaganza dancing and shimmering in the lights! It was amazing to witness how all age groups in the audience just loved the program and were cheering him on so enthusiastically.

Part 3: Meet-n-Greet

After the show, skaters lingered at the rink to greet their fans. A special table was set up just for Johnny at the edge of the rink while people were lining up for hugs, photos, and autographs. A flashlight and a pen with a yellow flower were brought out to assist in the process.

Johnny was cordial and funny. He even gave photo tips on how to elongate someone in a picture: hold the camera up and take the photo from a higher angle.

As Johnny was busy signing the autographs and chatting with his fans, two men—chefs from the hotel restaurant—showed up and were bashfully peeking around the line. They said they had enjoyed the show and just wanted to see Johnny before quickly heading back to the kitchen.

If you have a chance to go and see Johnny’s second performance in Sun Valley on August 31, do it! It is an unforgettable experience that will make you want to return there again and again...

Johnny’s newest post for his US Olympic Committee Team USA blog is up (including this pic of Johnny and Miki Ando from Johnny’s Instagram): “Performing in Japan”! IDK how on earth the man even found time to write this, but it’s a lovely tribute to his Japanese fans and the joy he finds in skating for them.

The very best part: In what I’m pretty sure is a Team USA first, Johnny writes “my husband” no less than four times throughout the post.

Love. It. #loveislove #marriage equality #LGBT

(The only thing that would have made the post even more perfect: a photo of Johnny and Victor. But here’s one below. )

Great to see Johnny getting a little sunlight that should help set his biological clock at least back to North American time.

Thank you for capturing all these photos and video, Anastasia. Beautiful triple axel.

Here's remembering that Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer have both donated generously to Washington United for Marriage to support marriage equality. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/02/bill-gates-steve-ballmer-microsoft-marriage-washington_n_1644532.html Between that and Gates' donations to education and funding mosquito research, I forgive them for my too many close encounters with the Blue Screens of Death (spiking my blood pressure).
